Pen Green Research, Training & Development Base

Pen Green Teaching School

Early years

If you would like to book a tour of our outstanding centre and early years spaces, please call us on 01536 400068.

Pen Green’s early years provision offers early education and care for children from aged 9 months to 3 years. We also offer early years provision at Kingswood Community Nursery based at Kingswood Children's Centre.  On site at Pen Green we have two 15 place early years domains, known respectively as:

The Baby and Toddler Nest
The Couthie

Both spaces offer a safe, comfortable environment for babies and toddlers to play, learn and interact with staff and other children. Families using our early years provision receive the same comprehensive support as nursery children including family support, home visits, observation and assessment.

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am - 6pm, 48 weeks a year.

Kingswood Community Nursery is currently offering morning and afternoon sessions during school term times.

What Makes Our Early Years Spaces Special?

Family Workers
Every child in the setting has a special person called a Family Worker. Family Workers are your child's advocate at Pen Green. They ensure that each child's emotional and developmental needs are consistently being met. They keep beautiful records of children's achievements, as well as their progress against the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

Home Visiting

Parents are their children’s first educators, so we work in partnership with families to build on their detailed knowledge of their child's interests. This helps us to extend children's learning and play, giving them a rich, bespoke learning experience. Home visiting is one of the ways we build strong links with every family. This helps us to better understand and support each unique child.

Qualified and Reflective Staff

Our staff are highly qualified practitioners which we believe enhances the learning environment for children. All family workers have a minimum Level 3 qualification, with most holding a BA degree in Early Years or higher. We also offer all staff continuous professional development opportunities through our on-site Research Base. This is an opportunity to continually develop practice and reflect on ways of working.

Truly Outstanding Provision
We offer children and families a unique early years experience. We have been rated Outstanding by Ofsted in every inspection. Children attending our provision benefit from a range of exciting environments such as the Discovery Area, The Beach, Soft Play Room and Forest School.

The Early Years Session

We believe that children are naturally curious about the world around them. Our nursery is a place where all children can follow their interests and lead their own learning. Staff will observe children closely, intervene when appropriate, and plan for future play possibilities.

The provision is set up in workshop areas with resources at child height. Independently accessing resources allows children to become effective decision makers, enhancing their play and learning experiences. These opportunities are planned and based on children’s schematic interests and curiosities at Pen Green and at home.

Family Workers support the routine of every unique child. Each space has a Sleep Room, giving children the independence to rest if they are feeling tired. Sleep baskets are at child height, allowing children to crawl in and out should they choose.

Planning, Observations and Documentation

Every child in the provision has their own 'Celebration of my Achievements' file. This document is produced by their family worker. Each worker has non-contact time on a weekly basis to document children’s learning and development. The whole team meet on a weekly basis to plan experiences for the children.

Observations at Pen Green can take the form of a written narrative, photographs or video. Children are placed up for focus observations on a rotational basis. Observations are carried out by all the staff in the setting as this gives us and the family multiple perspectives of every child.

We encourage parents to share their observations of the children from home. This can  be during a chat, in written form, through photographs, video or Tapestry.

2 Year Funding

Families in receipt of certain benefits are entitled to 15 hours of funded sessions when their child is aged 2. Please contact us if you think you might be eligible.

The Pen Green Centre for Children and their Families offers outstanding integrated early years services and education for the families of Corby.
